One of the best things a goaltender can do off ice to train for on ice would be one of two things. Bike sprinting, start at 30 seconds hard and 1minute30seconds rest (still spinning just as lighter tension). Do this for about six times and keep going until you can reach 10 one minute sprints. Another thing you could do would be plyometrics. This is a series of jumps and quickness drilss that you could probably get off a trainer around your area. Keep in mind I don't recommend doing plyo's a whole lot during the season as you can injure yourself and it is a hell of a workout.

One drill I do a lot off ice that really helps me is I find a wall (usually a brick wall), and throw the ball against the wall and try to catch it in my glove. I challenge myself by saying that I'm going to keep going until I catch the ball, say 12 times in a row. What I sometimes do if I have someone with me, and a wide enough section of wall, is I'll draw a net on the wall with chalk, and get my friend to try to "score" on my glove side. If your friend throws the ball elsewhere, don't worry about it. Just focus on all the shots he sends to your glove side. Get him to throw the ball faster and faster as well. When I do either of these drills on game day (10-15 min is enough), I find that I make way more glove saves in that game. Another drill that I sometimes do in a gym or on a tile floor (though the tile tends to be slippery so more challenging) is I strap on my pads, and wear my blocker and trapper, along with my roller blades and get a friend to throw the ball at me, down low. So this drill works on pad saves and getting up and down quickly, while the other one works on glove saves.

If you mean overall conditioning, do cardio/circuit training/reflex work...don't go heavy during the season, you are looking to stay fit, not overtrain. If you mean specific goalie related: for b-fly work, get a slide mat/board and some pad covers...for hand work, just hit the parking lot and play some street hockey, it works wonders ; )

Summer Trainning

Trainning is going great. I gained 10 pounds already. I changed my trainning to more speed related excercises, and it made a huge difference. When I was on the ice last night, I felt light and my endurance was much better. My only problem now is, like always, my Fleury legs. I always over push too much. I can't get myself to do little pushes when I'm down, but it'll come! My Brian Dx2 pants are awesome still! Love them! Best pair of pants I've ever had. They're big, light, and flexible. I modifi… Continue

Game On!

As some people might know, I was injured last season, so I did not play at all last year. Today, I just started goalie trainning for the first time in months. It was AWESOME! I had a new chest protector (Vaughn Epic 8800), new pants (Brians Dx2 Pro), and a new mask (Hackva). It was pretty ackward with the new equipment, but I managed to do pretty well.

Off Season (dryland) training versus just playing a Summer sport

I'd like to get some feedback and thoughts on the topic of off-season training versus just playing a Summer sport or combining both. Also thoughts on how much ice outside of a goaltending camp, if any, considered to be sufficient to maintain skills.
