Behind the net

Hi folks just wondering if anyone can give me some good advice for when the play is behind the net? I manage fairly well with most aspects of the game but cannot get to grips with plays from behind the net which other teams then pick up on and punish me. thanks

Hi George Allan Hoggan here think I know you. have a good technique for behind the goal wich is used accross the pond. You can get in touch with me at Dundee Ice arena on the 6th Feb I have goalie coaching there every second Wed. I am also starting sessions every second Mon on end ice at Dundee from 9pm till 10ish. This starts on Mon 4th feb. You are more than welcome to come along. Hope to hear from you Allan.

Cheers Allan, the Wednesdays are out for me as I work in my dads boozer then but I may be interested in the Monday sessions depending on permission from my wife lol. Thanks for the response its a pity you couldn't get something running at Kdy as well. I'll keep in touch cheers again.

what do you mean by Kdy?

Kdy is short for my hometown.... Kirkcaldy. The rink where Allan is coaching goalies is 45 mins from my home, longer when the traffic is busy.

I tried Kdy but no ice time and it costs the earth. I would try and explain the technique but it sounds complicated much easier to demo

The first thing you must keep in mind is not to get caught going from post to post. You can actually control where the player will come out from. Hug the post that you feel the most comfortable with, so that you can make a lateral movement towasrds the side you are better at. Be patient and use alot of head movement. Place your stick blade , slightly angled out at the toe of your skate, to intercept any pass destined towards the slot area.

The most common thing to use in today's game is the four point system. The four points being at post, middle head to right, turn head to left, and other post. (or vice versa depending on which post you are coming from) This took me a lot of practice to learn this correctly and it is still something that I can improve. The good thing about this system is that, when done corrrectly you should always have an eye on the puck, as well as you shouldn't be too far from either post. Anyway if you need more explanantions or maybe some pictures if I could find them let me know.

I'd like to know about this system as well, Ryan, thanks

What I try to do is keep my head turning and almost, but not quite turn around. Keep moving, and use your stick to block passes out from behind. I had great luck w/ that last night, usually teams will pick up on that quick and stop passing by you, last night that team i played didn't pick on it at all, I broke up so many of their passes it wasn't even funny. But, George it takes lots of work and lots of neck turning, and talking to your D about keeping the front of the crease clear for you.

Ok so here are the basics. Lets say we start on the right posk ok and you catch with your left hand.
1. Block passing lane, looking over right shoulder.
2. Shuffle to the middle of the net, still looking over your right shoulder. You may still block the passing lane but pick your spots as you can sometimes get caught.
3. Stay in the middle of the net, but now look over your left shoulder. The same goes for the passing lane as step 2.
4. Push to left post block passing lane with stick and or glove.

This system is different but you rarely need to turn your head which means less chance of losing site of the puck

Once you practice this and being to master it, you can integrate on of the most used moves in hockey when wrapping around or behind the net, the ONE KNEE DOWN. If you already are familiar with this than that is an excellent tool to use when you are facing wraparounds or in close 2-1's and things like that. If not just ask and I will help as much as I can and give you as much information as possible.

Oh ok, yeah, this is what I already do!!! I don't use the ONE KNEE DOWN, I have my stick there to block a wrap around, but ok I see what this is. I'm very good at blocking that pass out from behind the net. thank you very much Ryan.

Thanks for your advice, the thing is I plat recce hockey and only get on the ice once a week to practice this stuff and if it dont fit into what the coach wants to do with the rest of the guys then i dont get to practice it much. I really need to get along to some goalie specific training but juggling it with a wife, kids and a full time job what chance do I have lol, Thanks and i'll let you know how i get on.

Summer Trainning

Trainning is going great. I gained 10 pounds already. I changed my trainning to more speed related excercises, and it made a huge difference. When I was on the ice last night, I felt light and my endurance was much better. My only problem now is, like always, my Fleury legs. I always over push too much. I can't get myself to do little pushes when I'm down, but it'll come! My Brian Dx2 pants are awesome still! Love them! Best pair of pants I've ever had. They're big, light, and flexible. I modifi… Continue

Game On!

As some people might know, I was injured last season, so I did not play at all last year. Today, I just started goalie trainning for the first time in months. It was AWESOME! I had a new chest protector (Vaughn Epic 8800), new pants (Brians Dx2 Pro), and a new mask (Hackva). It was pretty ackward with the new equipment, but I managed to do pretty well.

Off Season (dryland) training versus just playing a Summer sport

I'd like to get some feedback and thoughts on the topic of off-season training versus just playing a Summer sport or combining both. Also thoughts on how much ice outside of a goaltending camp, if any, considered to be sufficient to maintain skills.
